NEW YORK -- Seemingly in one quick burst, the Yankees are becoming healthy.

On the same morning the club deemed Alex Rodriguez fit enough to return to the lineup, starter Chien-Ming Wang struck out seven over five innings of an extended spring game. Wang allowed three hits and no runs, resting around 91 mph with his fastball.

"Velocity is more important if you don't have the sink," Yankees manager Joe Girardi said. "But from what I understand, the sink was pretty good today."

Wang threw 72 pitches in the game and another 13 in a postgame bullpen session, and he is scheduled to throw 100 pitches his next time out on Tuesday. That start will not necessarily come in an extended spring game, but possibly as a Minor League rehab assignment. And because Class A Tampa is not home next Tuesday, Wang's likely destination would either be Triple-A Scranton/Wilkes-Barre or Double-A Trenton.

If he feels fine following that outing, Wang could potentially rejoin the Yankees five days later.

"If he feels that he's ready, then we make a determination," Girardi said.

Wang has been on the disabled list since April 19, nursing weakness in the abductor muscles of both hips. He was 0-3 with a 34.50 ERA in three starts, prompting concern regarding an injury.

Those were Wang's first three starts since surgery last year to repair a torn Lisfranc ligament in his right foot and a partial tear of a tendon in the same foot. He had been the Yankees' most successful starter over the previous two seasons, winning 19 games in each of them.
