Right-hander will be coming back from shoulder surgery

The Nationals have agreed to terms on a one-year, $2 million contract with right-hander Chien-Ming Wang, two baseball sources confirmed to MLB.com on Tuesday.

The Nationals are scheduled to hold a news conference on Friday at Space Coast Stadium in Viera, Fla.

Newsday, The Boston Globe and the United Daily News, a Taiwanese newspaper, indicated last week that a deal was done. The Nationals have not confirmed that Wang has signed with the team.

According to the United Daily News, Nationals president Stan Kasten visited Taiwan's deputy ambassador, Daton Chang, last Friday and confirmed that Wang was going to sign with Washington and that the team would make an announcement Tuesday.

When reached by phone, Kasten declined to talk about Wang. General manager Mike Rizzo was not available for comment because he is in Tampa, Fla., dealing with right-hander Brian Bruney's arbitration case.

The past two seasons, Wang has pitched in a combined 27 games. In 2008, Wang didn't pitch after the All-Star break because of foot problems. This past season, Wang had arthroscopic surgery on his right shoulder and missed the Yankees' World Series run in October.

Wang isn't expected to pitch in a Major League game until sometime in May because he is still rehabbing his right shoulder. Wang is not in any pain and throwing from 120 feet on flat ground. No date is set for Wang to throw off a mound.

MLB.com was the first to report that the Nationals were monitoring Wang two weeks ago.

At his best, Wang showed that he can be the ace of a pitching staff. In 2006 and '07, Wang went a combined 38-13 with a 3.67 ERA for the Yankees.

Wang is best remembered in Washington for giving up Ryan Zimmerman's first career walk-off home run, on June 18, 2006.
